The MWA Kids Fishing Derby moves up on the calendar this year to Saturday, March 7, when participants will have the unique opportunity to fish for Rainbow Trout.

The Macon Water Authority (MWA) will be hosting the 15th Annual Kids Fishing Derby at Javors Lucas Lake on Saturday, March 7. Onsite registration will open at 7:30 a.m., with fishing beginning at 8:00 a.m., followed by the Weigh-In to determine winners at 11:00 a.m.

This year, the MWA Kids Fishing Derby has been moved up on the calendar to Saturday, March 7, rather than the first Saturday in June, as it has been in previous years. As a result, participants between the ages of 3 and 16 will have a unique opportunity this year to fish for Rainbow Trout, since Javors Lucas Lake will be stocked with these fish prior to the event. Participants must bring their own bait and tackle.

Prizes will be awarded to first, second, and third place winners in four age group categories, as well as a grand prize given to the one reeling in the Biggest Catch of the Day. The MWA also will have a drawing for additional gifts for those in attendance. Refreshments will be served, and admission is free.

The address of the Kids Fishing Derby is 150 Broach Lane, off of Upper River Road. The annual MWA Kids Fishing Derby is sponsored by the Authority and the Macon Water Alliance, a Georgia Non-Profit subsidiary of the MWA.

The Macon Water Alliance is dedicated to providing environmental education opportunities – in addition to water resource-focused assistance – for citizens in Middle Georgia.

The goal of the annual MWA Kids Fishing Derby is to offer an opportunity for outdoor recreation for local families, while providing public education on the importance of protecting and preserving drinking water resources.

MWA Fishing Season Opens the following day on Sunday, March 8

Following the Kids Fishing Derby, the Public Fishing Season at Javors Lucas Lake officially opens the next day on Sunday, March 8. During the months of March and April, the MWA reservoir will be open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Then, the first of May thru the end of June, Javors Lucas Lake will be open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, but from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The reservoir will be closed to the public during the months of July and August, before re-opening from Sept. 5 – Oct. 25, on Saturdays and Sundays, from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
