The MWA 2020 Public Fishing Season resumes on May 1, following closure of the lake during the month of April in response to the pandemic. Guests must still practice social distancing and other safe practices.

The Macon Water Authority (MWA) will reopen its drinking water reservoir, Javors Lucas Lake, for public fishing and boating, starting this weekend.

Beginning on Friday, May 1, the Authority will resume its previously announced public fishing season schedule for 2020, pending any future changes in local or state policies related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the months of May and June, Javors Lucas Lake will be open to the public on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Fishing will not be available on Monday, May 25, for the Memorial Day Holiday.

Javors Lucas Lake will be closed for public fishing during the months of July and August, which is typical of the annual fishing season schedule at MWA, before re-opening again on Saturday, Sept. 5, 2020. However, Javors Lucas Lake will not be open on the Independence Day (Saturday, July 4) or Labor Day (Monday, Sept. 7) holidays.

From Saturday, Sept. 5, through Sunday, Oct. 25, Javors Lucas Lake will re-open two days per week on Saturdays and Sundays, from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Sunday, Oct. 25, will be the last day of public fishing at the MWA’s Javors Lucas Lake this year.)

Even as the Authority resumes public access to its drinking water reservoir on May 1, guests are required to practice social distancing and other safeguards and precautions still in place during this pandemic.

The public can access Javors Lucas Lake at 150 Broach Lane Road, off of Upper River Road. The daily fee for fishing from the banks of Javors Lucas Lake is $5 per vehicle, while the fee for those fishing from a boat is $10 per vehicle.

“We will monitor the traffic at the lake and make sure precautions are in place, such as social distancing, to ensure our guests have a safe and enjoyable experience on the lake,” says Gary McCoy, MWA Director of Water Operations.

In addition to resuming public fishing at Javors Lucas Lake, the MWA also has reopened its drive-thru window at the Albert Billingslea Headquarters Building. The drive-thru window was temporarily closed on April 6, as another precaution in the Authority’s response to the pandemic.
