Kids Fishing Derby Success

Jul 30, 2013 by Dr. Chris Wood

Kameron Hardwick, age 7, reeled in a 5.82 pound catfish for the Biggest Catch of the Day at the 2013 Kids Fishing Derby at Javors Lucas Lake.

The 256 participating children and youth aged 3 to 16, in addition to their parents, grandparents, and accompanying adults, enjoyed the 2013 MWA Kids Fishing Derby, sponsored by Academy Sports + Outdoors, on Saturday June 1, at Javors Lucas Lake. But perhaps none celebrated more so than 7-year-old Kameron Hardwick, who reeled in the Biggest Catch of the Day – a 5.82 pound catfish – and an Apple I-pad grand prize as a result.

Participants came from throughout Macon, Bibb County and Middle Georgia, as well as 12 other counties across the state and even as far as just over the state line in Alabama.

As for the Derby results, there were impressive quantities and high quality fish caught that day.

The winners in the 3 to 5-year-old age group were Emma Baker in First with a catch of 3.26 lbs., followed by McKenzie Baker in Second (2.53 lbs.), and J’Marquis Stephen in Third (2.11 lbs.).

In the 6 to 9-year-old age group, Jermaine Thomas finished in First with a catch of 3.82 lbs., followed by Hayley Poole in Second (3.61 lbs.) and Jeremy Martin in Third (3.41 lbs.).

The winners in the 10 to 13-year-old category were Jawun Smith in First, with a catch of 4.03 lbs., followed by Tabitha Fowler in Second (3.15 lbs.) and Jaden Braddy in Third (3.06 lbs.).

Finally, in the 14 to 16-year-old age group, Mureo Lowe won First place with a catch of 2.24 lbs., followed by Turner Gillis in Second (1.96 lbs.) and Caleb Cummings in Third (1.82 lbs.).

While Academy Sports + Outdoors served as premier sponsor of the Kids Fishing Derby, additional sponsors and/or contributors included: the Optimist Club, Cherokee Brick, M/R Systems, Capital City Bank, Pyles Plumbing contractor, Chambley Printing Company, Water Treatment & Controls, James & Sylvia Robinson, Elliott Machine Shop, South Eastern Underwater, Mr. & Mrs. Steve Cavanaugh, Georgia Power, and JWA Public Communications.

MWA employees and retirees, as well as Board Members Frank Patterson, Steve Rickman, and Javors J. Lucas also helped organize the Fishing Derby or served as volunteers during the event.
