Kids Fishing Derby is Saturday June 2

May 27, 2018 by Chris Wood, Ph.D.

The Macon Water Authority (MWA) will host its 13th Annual Kids Fishing Derby on Saturday June 2, 2018, at Javors Lucas Lake, located at 150 Broach Lane off of Upper River Road.

Registration for the event begins at 6:00 a.m., with the fishing tournament starting one hour later. The official weigh-in, which will be held at 10:30 a.m., will determine the prizes to be awarded for the biggest catches of the day.

The MWA’s annual Kids Fishing Derby is one of its most popular public education outreach events the Authority hosts during the year. The Fishing Derby is organized by the MWA Outdoor Education Committee, in conjunction with the Macon Water Alliance, a Georgia Non-Profit Corporation dedicated to providing environmental education and water resource-focused assistance for the citizens of Middle Georgia.

The purpose of the MWA Kids Fishing Derby is to provide an opportunity for outdoor recreation for local families, while raising awareness on the importance of protecting and preserving drinking water resources.

Children and Youth between the ages of 3 and 16 are eligible to compete in the MWA Kids Fishing Derby. Prizes will be awarded for the largest fish caught by contestants in four age group categories, in addition to a grand prize for the Biggest Catch of the Day.

Admission to the Kids Fishing Derby is free, and refreshments will be provided. Additional gifts will be distributed through a raffle at no cost to those in attendance.

Children and their adult guests can fish the entire day for free, up until 3:00 p.m. The MWA Kids Fishing Derby is held on one of the few days during the year that the Georgia Department of Natural Resources allows fishing without a permit, to encourage family participation in the sport.
