MWA customer: "This is a big deal, isn't it?"

May 21, 2018 by Chris Wood, Ph.D.

“This is a big deal, isn’t it?” asked a Macon Water Authority (MWA) customer during his recent tour of the Frank C. Amerson, Jr. Water Treatment Plant, as the complexity and enormity of the utility’s drinking water treatment processes began to sink in. “It’s a very big deal, yes sir,” replied Chuck Mixon, Assistant Director of Water Treatment, who was providing Amerson Plant tours for customers as a part of the Authority’s National Drinking Water Week festivities.

The MWA celebrated National Drinking Water Week, which was recognized across the country from May 6-12 this year, with an Open House at the award-winning Frank C. Amerson, Jr. Water Treatment Plant on Thursday May 10. The Amerson Plant is a five-time “Plant of the Year” Award winner in the state, as judged by the Georgia Association of Water Professionals (GAWP).

The highlight of the free Open House was the tour of the MWA Amerson Plant for guests, who also received lunch, drawings for prizes, promotional items, and public information on how the MWA produces the Best Tasting Drinking Water in North America, as judged by the American Water Works Association (AWWA).

During National Drinking Water Week, the MWA also recognized its employees on Monday May 7, for the statewide Water Professionals Appreciation Day. In 2015, the Georgia General Assembly passed legislation designating the first Monday in May each year as Water Professionals Appreciation Day. The MWA thanked its 200-plus employees for their dedicated service to the Authority and its customers, providing them with breakfast that day and a small gift to commemorate the event.

For more than 40 years, the AWWA and its members such as the MWA have celebrated National Drinking Water Week as a unique opportunity for both water professionals and the communities they serve to join together in recognizing the vital role water plays in our daily lives. The theme of this year’s Drinking Water Week celebration was “Protect the Source.”
