(L to R): Gary McCoy, Director of Water Operations, presents Brian McDade with the GAWP District 5 Top Water Plant Operator Award, while Quinton Gibson receives the Top Wastewater Operator Award from Larry Reynolds, Director of Wastewater Operations.

During the Spring Conference of the Georgia Association of Water Professionals (GAWP), employees from the Macon Water Authority (MWA) were recognized as the District’s Top Operators for both Water and Wastewater Plants, as well as for 100% compliance at all three of the utility’s treatment facilities.

Brian McDade, MWA Operator at the Frank C. Amerson, Jr. Water Treatment Plant, was selected as this year’s Top Water Plant Operator in Georgia’s District 5, while Quinton Gibson, an Operator at the Rocky Creek Water Reclamation Facility, received the award as the District’s Top Wastewater Plant Operator.

McDade is a Class 2 Water Operator who has been with the MWA for three years, after working previously for a privately-owned water treatment company, and Georgia Power prior to that.

Gibson has worked for the MWA for 12 years, beginning as an Operator at the Rocky Creek Water Reclamation Facility. After receiving his Class 2 Wastewater Treatment License, he was promoted to his present position of Shift Supervisor.

According to MWA officials, the utility proudly boasts a total of 18 water or wastewater plant Operators who have been selected as District Winners of the GAWP Top Operator Award. Among those past winners are two water professionals who have advanced through the ranks at the Authority to now serve as Division Managers. Gary McCoy, a GAWP Top Op in 2001, is the current MWA Director of Water Operations, while Larry Reynolds, a Top Op in 2008, is the current MWA Director of Wastewater Operations.

Five past MWA Top Water Operator District Award winners, who are all still on staff at the Authority, have gone on to win the coveted Operators Meritorious Service Award, presented annually by the Georgia Section of the American Water Works Association (GAWWA). The Operators Meritorious Service Award is the equivalent of being selected as the Top Operator in the state of Georgia. And three previous winners of the District Top Wastewater Plant Operator Award have gone on to win the statewide William D. Hatfield Award, presented by the Water Environmental Federation (WEF) to Georgia’s best wastewater plant operators.

In addition to having the District’s Top Ops this year, the MWA’s Rocky Creek Water Reclamation Facility won the GAWP Platinum Award for 100% permit compliance for the 18th consecutive year. The MWA’s Lower Poplar Water Reclamation Facility and Amerson Water Treatment Plant both won the GAWP Gold Award for 100% compliance in 2016.

The MWA’s Amerson Water Treatment Plant has been selected by GAWP as the Plant of the Year in Georgia on five separate occasions, a remarkable accomplishment for those water professionals on staff there, since a water production facility is not eligible to win Plant of the Year in consecutive years. In addition, the drinking water produced at the Amerson Plant was voted the Best Tasting Drinking Water in North America, as judged by AWWA in 2009.
