MWA purchases B&G Water Company

April 05, 2019 by Chris Wood, Ph.D.

The MWA has purchased B&G Water Company and its private water system, which will result in approximately 450 new customers joining the Authority from South Macon-Bibb County.

The Macon Water Authority (MWA) has acquired B&G Water Company, which will result in approximately 450 new accounts from South Macon-Bibb County joining the utility’s customer base. The transaction closed on Monday March 25, for a price of $300,000.

With the owners of B&G Water Company set to retire, they approached the MWA recently about acquiring their privately-owned water system. B&G Water Company was founded to serve the residential neighborhoods constructed by the owners’ development company.

“We believe this is best for everyone involved, and the Macon Water Authority will serve our customers with commitment and excellence,” says Evelyn Gibson, on behalf of her husband Reggie and their business partner and co-owner Bob Carey. “We want to thank each one of our customers for their loyalty, patience, and understanding over many years of service, as well as during this transition.”

The first order of business for the MWA will be to connect the seven smaller water systems operated by B&G Water Company to the MWA water distribution system, thus eliminating these customers’ reliance on wells for their daily water needs. Then, these new customers can enjoy service from a water system with additional resources and capabilities, with assurances that industry standards for water quality are met or exceeded.

Those without MWA service currently will benefit from enhanced fire protection and subsequent lower fire insurance premiums, once the Authority’s water distribution infrastructure has been extended into their neighborhoods. In addition, the MWA offers billing and payment options, 24/7 on-call support, protection against the adverse effects of drought, and the expertise of 222 dedicated employees at an award-winning system. The MWA was honored a decade ago for producing the Best Tasting Drinking Water in North America, according to judging from water professionals at the American Water Works Association (AWWA).

“B&G has a reputation for taking care of their customers and for providing outstanding customer service, and they felt we also do things the right way,” says Tony Rojas, MWA Executive Director and President. “It is a good match, philosophically and geographically. They (B&G) wanted their customers to be in good hands, and we assured them they will.”

The MWA will be hosting several neighborhood meetings to inform B&G customers of the details of the water system acquisition, while addressing any questions they may have concerning the transition. Those customers impacted by the MWA’s purchase of the private system reside in the South Macon-Bibb County neighborhood subdivisions of: Thorn Hill at Houston Road and Nob Hill, Von Reg, Meri Hill, Jones Road, Hooper Hill, Green Hill, Gibson Drive, as well as Chick-A-Dee and Goodall Mill.

During the current billing cycle, B&G is inserting into customer bills a joint letter from the company and the MWA that explains the transition in ownership and tells customers where and when their neighborhood’s meeting will be held. The MWA also will be posting signs and updates on its website about the location and times of the public meetings.

“With these customers coming from a private system that’s within our service area, it makes sound business sense to make this purchase at such an affordable price; we believe it’s a win-win for the Authority and the B&G customer,” says Sam Hart, MWA Chairman. “We are excited to welcome them to the MWA family, and for the opportunity to serve these new customers who are connecting to our system. Essentially, this transaction reflects our mission to provide clean, safe, reliable and high-quality drinking water to the people of our community.”
