Macon Water Authority Confirms Drinking Water Remains Safe and Below Proposed EPA PFAS Limits

Macon, GA — (3/25/2026) — The Macon Water Authority (MWA) is proud to report that its latest testing results confirm the Authority’s drinking water remains safe and continues to meet all current and proposed federal guidelines for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). These results reflect MWA’s ongoing commitment to delivering high-quality drinking water to the community.

PFAS are a group of man-made chemicals found in everyday products such as nonstick cookware, water-resistant clothing, and firefighting foam. The presence of PFAS in drinking water has been a growing concern in many communities across Georgia and the nation. In response, MWA continues to invest significant resources into advanced treatment processes and monitoring to minimize these substances and protect public health.

MWA’s drinking water source, the Ocmulgee River, spans hundreds of miles and flows through multiple communities and regions before reaching Macon. As a result, trace environmental compounds, including PFAS, can originate upstream. MWA takes seriously its responsibility to treat and test this water to ensure that any such compounds are reduced to levels that meet or exceed all safety standards before being delivered to customers.

Recent laboratory testing evaluated multiple PFAS compounds in MWA’s finished drinking water. Only a few were detected, all at extremely low concentrations measured in parts per trillion—comparable to a few drops of water in an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

All detected levels remain below the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) proposed drinking water standards, confirming that MWA’s drinking water continues to meet recommended safety thresholds.

“Protecting public health is our top priority,” said Michel Wanna, Interim Executive Director. “These results confirm that our water remains safe to drink, and we will continue to proactively monitor and ensure the highest level of water quality for our community.”

The testing was performed by a certified laboratory, ensuring accurate and reliable results. MWA will continue routine monitoring as part of its ongoing commitment to transparency, regulatory compliance, and protecting public health.

Additional information on water quality, including PFAS monitoring results, will be included in MWA’s annual Consumer Confidence Report (CCR), scheduled for release by July.

Customers can remain confident in the safety of their drinking water. For more information, visit www.maconwater.org.
