Major Upgrades Underway at Lower Poplar Water Reclamation Facility
Company News
The Macon Water Authority (MWA) is making significant headway on a multi-phase upgrade to the Lower Poplar Water Reclamation Facility (WRF)—a key investment in the future of wastewater treatment and environmental protection for the region.
During its July 10, 2025, Board Meeting, MWA leadership announced that Phase I construction is well underway, with substantial completion expected by February 2026. This phase represents one of the Authority’s largest ongoing capital improvement efforts.
Key Project Highlights:
- Site preparation and demolition work began in May 2025.
- Temporary facilities and bypass pumping systems have been installed to maintain full operations during construction.
- Demolition of the existing aeration basins and secondary clarifiers is scheduled to begin later this summer.
- Structural concrete and equipment installation will follow in the coming months.
Why It Matters
The Lower Poplar WRF is one of two major treatment facilities operated by MWA and serves a large portion of Macon-Bibb County. The upgrades will:
- Improve treatment capacity and efficiency
- Support environmental compliance with state and federal regulations
- Strengthen system reliability for future growth
The project is part of MWA’s long-term capital plan focused on enhancing infrastructure, safeguarding public health, and protecting the Ocmulgee River watershed.
