The MWA, through its Outdoor Recreation Committee and non-profit Macon Water Alliance, will be hosting the 19th annual Kids Fishing Derby on March 2, at Javors Lucas Lake. Registration begins at 6:00 a.m., with young anglers casting their lines starting at 7:00 a.m. The weigh-in to determine prize winners will be held at 10:00 a.m.
The entrance to the Fishing Derby at Javors Lucas Lake is at 150 Broach Lane, accessible from Upper River Road. The event is free for Derby participants from the ages of 3 to 16, as well as their accompanying adults. Prizes will be awarded for the overall biggest catch of the day, as well as for winners within four ages group categories. Refreshments will be served, and attendees are welcome to fish the entire day.
Javors Lucas Lake has been closed to anglers since the end of last year, as the site of the Fishing Derby is stocked with 500 pounds of catfish and 1,000 pounds of trout, provided by Aquatic Environmental Services. No fishing permit is required to participate in the Derby, but anglers must bring their own bait and tackle.
