Student-Led Fish Habitat Project Aims to Boost Ecosystem at Javors Lucas Lake
Company News
Macon, Ga. — On Wednesday, July 16 at 10:00 a.m., Mercer University faculty and students will join forces with the Macon Water Authority (MWA) to install specially designed fish habitats at Javors Lucas Lake, a primary drinking water reservoir for the community.
The project is focused on improving the lake’s ecological balance by supporting bait species such as minnows and crayfish, which are preferred food sources for largemouth bass. Prior research conducted at the lake identified an overabundance of predator species, resulting in declines in lower-level predator populations and largemouth bass in particular. The installation of new habitats is intended to restore that balance in a way that is compatible with the lake’s function as a water supply source.
Two types of habitats have been developed to meet the specific needs of each species. The structures are built from durable plastic cistern panels typically used for in-ground rainwater storage and are designed to simulate natural breeding environments. The crayfish habitats are supplemented with tubing bundles and angular rock to resemble sticks and shelter spaces.
Participants in the installation will include three Mercer faculty members, one graduate student, and approximately six high school students from Stratford Academy.
This effort represents an ongoing partnership between Mercer University and the Macon Water Authority that blends environmental research, youth education, and community collaboration.
