Emergency Stormwater Repair Forces Temporary Closure of Walls Road
Macon, Georgia — [11/19/2025] — The Macon Water Authority (MWA) has temporarily closed a section of Walls Road, located near the bottom of the hill by Northeast High School, to perform emergency stormwater infrastructure repairs following the failure of a brick headwall connected to an aging box culvert.
During an initial assessment, crews anticipated completing repairs without affecting traffic. However, after clearing the site, inspectors discovered that the damage was significantly more extensive than expected. The box culvert, estimated to be nearly 100 years old, had experienced substantial erosion at the outfall, where the creek bed was undermined by approximately five feet. This created a structural safety concern that required the full closure of the roadway.
Given that Walls Road is frequently used by school buses and neighborhood traffic, the MWA’s Stormwater Division promptly mobilized a contractor to begin the emergency repair process. The contractor coordinated directly with the Macon-Bibb County Traffic Engineer prior to the closure, and detour routes have been established to guide motorists safely around the area. A detour map is included for public reference.
Scope of Work
The emergency repair project includes:
- Removing the collapsed brick headwall extension from the creek
- Constructing a new reinforced concrete foundation for the box culvert and wingwalls
- Rebuilding wingwall extensions to support two existing stormwater pipes that connect to curb inlets along the roadway
- Stabilizing the creek bed to prevent further erosion and protect the structure long-term
Crews have already begun the work, and the project is expected to be completed by Friday, December 12, 2025.
The Macon Water Authority appreciates the community’s patience and cooperation as crews work to restore the integrity of this stormwater structure and reopen Walls Road as quickly and safely as possible.
