MWA Provides Update on $114 Million in Infrastructure Improvements
Company News
The Macon Water Authority (MWA) continues to make steady progress on more than $114 million in capital improvement projects aimed at enhancing water and sewer services across Bibb County. During the May Board and Committee meetings, Assistant Executive Director and Vice President of Field and Plant Operations Michel Wanna provided detailed updates on the eight (8) major projects that are critical to maintaining and upgrading the infrastructure of the community.
Lower Poplar Influent Pump Station ($17 million):
Construction is underway, with more than 60 shop drawings reviewed. Work is being carefully phased to ensure the station remains fully operational during the upgrade process.
Rocky Creek Water Reclamation Facility Rehabilitation (Phase 1 – $20 million):
Design work is ongoing for a large-scale upgrade to this facility. Planned improvements include major pump station and electrical system replacements to increase capacity and reliability.
Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI):
MWA has purchased $4.7 million in new meters and is preparing to issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) to identify a contractor for installation. The AMI system will provide greater accuracy and near real-time data for MWA customers.
Second Electrical Feed at Rocky Creek:
MWA is partnering with Georgia Power to implement an independent secondary electrical feed, improving system reliability. This approach is expected to save approximately $5 million when compared to installing backup generators for the entire facility.
While global supply chain issues and rising material costs have impacted the construction industry nationwide, MWA’s projects remain on schedule and within scope.
Board members are coordinating a site visit to tour the Amerson Water Treatment Plant, the Lower Poplar, and Rocky Creek Water Reclamation facilities in the coming weeks. These investments highlight the proactive approach now employed by MWA to address aging infrastructure and ensure long-term service reliability for MWA customers.
