Wastewater Treatment Operator

Compensation Philosophy:
The Macon Water Authority (MWA) compensation philosophy states that the starting salary for each pay grade will be competitive and fair based on the minimum requirements of each position. For candidates with a combination of knowledge, skills, and experience above the minimum requirements, MWA has the ability to offer a starting salary between the minimum and mid-point, with a possibility of a salary closer to the mid-point or slightly above.
Job Summaries:
Trainee:
Performs technical duties in the daily operations of the wastewater treatment plant by observing the operation of bar screens and grit removal equipment, clarifiers, re-circulation pumps, sludge pumps, and other operating units to ensure proper operation and guard against equipment breakdown. Identifies required maintenance and performs PPMs as assigned to the equipment utilized in the wastewater treatment plant operation. Performs lab analysis and adjusts rates, feeds, etc., accordingly and reports all findings to licensed operators.
Class III:
Performs technical duties in the daily operations of the wastewater treatment plant by observing the operation of bar screens and grit removal equipment, clarifiers, re-circulation pumps, sludge pumps, and other operating units to ensure proper operation and guard against equipment breakdown. Identifies required maintenance and performs PPMs as assigned to the equipment utilized in the wastewater treatment plant operation. Performs lab analysis and adjusts rates, feeds, etc., accordingly. This role trains new employees on daily operations. Acts as a shift leader in the absence of a higher licensed operator.
Class II:

This role trains new employees on daily operations. Assists Class III operators with troubleshooting and plant adjustments when necessary. Acts as a shift leader in the absence of a higher licensed operator.
Class I:
Performs technical duties in the daily operations of the wastewater treatment plant by observing the operation of bar screens and grit removal equipment, clarifiers, re-circulation pumps, sludge pumps, and other operating units to ensure proper operation and guard against equipment breakdown. Identifies required maintenance and performs PPMs assigned to the equipment utilized in the wastewater treatment plant operation. Performs lab analysis and adjusts rates, feeds, etc., accordingly. This role trains new employees on daily operations. This operator assists Class II and III operators with troubleshooting and plant adjustments when necessary. Demonstrates leadership, as well as the ability to think critically and multi-task. The position makes major operating decisions in the absence of management.
Responsibilities:
Trainee:
- Collects wastewater samples to conduct tests and prepares samples to be
- Test and analyze wastewater samples and report results to licensed operators
- Observe microbial activity and report results to licensed operators
- Reports abnormal conditions to licensed operators
- Maintains records of laboratory results and other data concerning the plants’ operation
- Enter data into the computer for monthly state reports and NPDES permits
- Properly collects and preserves composite samples for testing in the central laboratory.
- Monitor gauges, meters, and control panels and identify variations in operating conditions.
- Works with various chemicals and makes proper chemical adjustments
- Receives and unloads bulk chemicals and other supplies
- Changes out chlorine cylinders when needed
- Operates collectors, mixers, pumps, boilers, engines, generators, rotary presses, and other equipment
- Operate a dump truck on the property or haul sludge to Rocky Creek sheds
- Identifies equipment issues and submits work orders through the CMMS system
- Maintains cleanliness of buildings
- Performs preventive and minor maintenance and troubleshooting
- Washes down various processes
- Performs other duties as assigned
Class III:

- Test and analyze wastewater samples and adjust processes according to test results

- Maintains records and prepares reports of laboratory results and data concerning the plants’ operation and enters data into the computer

General Qualifications
Physical Requirements:
- Frequent walking, standing, stooping
- Ability to carry 50 pounds or more.
- Occasionally sitting, crawling, crouching, climbing, and balancing.
- It may occasionally require climbing and may involve traveling over various terrain.
- Ability to grasp and hold.
- Must be able to follow MWA’s no facial hair policy for this role
Education, Licenses, and Certifications:
Trainee:
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Valid Georgia driver’s license with a safe driving record; CDL preferred
- Candidates selected must obtain Class III Licensure within two years of employment.
- Must be available to work rotating shifts.
- Some computer skills required
Class III:
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Valid Georgia driver’s license with a safe driving record; CDL preferred
- Class III Wastewater License required.
- Must be able to work rotating shifts
- Must be able to work overtime, sometimes with little to no notice
- Must be able to work alone or without supervision
Class II:
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Valid Georgia driver’s license with a safe driving record; CDL preferred
- Two years of experience, or one year of experience plus a college degree in a relevant field
- Class II Wastewater License required.
- Must be able to work rotating shifts
- Must be able to work overtime, sometimes with little to no notice
- Must be able to work alone or without supervision
Class I:
- Class, I Wastewater License required.
- Three years of experience, or two years of experience plus a college degree in a relevant field
- Valid Georgia driver’s license with a safe driving record; CDL preferred

- Must be able to work alone or without supervision
Salary: $22.12-$39.42/hr
