Moody’s Affirms Macon Water Authority’s Aa2 Credit Rating, Citing Strong Financial Management
Company News, Industry News
MACON, Ga. (October 20, 2026) – The Macon Water Authority (MWA) has received another positive financial assessment, as Moody’s Ratings has affirmed the Authority’s Aa2 credit rating, recognizing its strong financial position, sound management practices, and long-term financial planning.
In its October 19, 2026, report, Moody’s also assigned an Aa2 long-term rating to approximately $70.1 million in Water and Sewer Refunding and Improvement Revenue Bonds, Series 2026A.
The Aa2 rating is considered high quality and indicates a very low level of credit risk. The rating reflects MWA’s ability to manage its financial obligations while continuing to invest in essential water and wastewater infrastructure.
Strong Financial Performance and Planning
Moody’s highlighted several factors supporting MWA’s credit rating, including its healthy financial profile, strong liquidity, and proactive approach to setting rates.
The report projects that MWA will maintain strong financial reserves and sufficient revenues to meet its debt obligations as the Authority moves forward with its five-year Capital Improvement Plan (CIP).
The plan includes investments designed to improve aging infrastructure, enhance system reliability, and support the long-term water and wastewater needs of Macon-Bibb County and surrounding communities.
Moody’s also recognized MWA’s structured financial planning, including planned rate adjustments between fiscal years 2027 and 2029 to support infrastructure improvements and maintain financial stability.
Investing in the Future
The approximately $70.1 million bond issuance will support MWA’s water and sewer improvement and refinancing efforts. Following the issuance, the Authority is expected to have approximately $231.3 million in outstanding debt.
While Moody’s noted that MWA’s infrastructure requires continued investment, the report acknowledged the Authority’s capital improvement strategy and its efforts to address aging assets.
Maintaining a strong credit rating is important because it can help utilities access financing at more favorable borrowing costs, potentially reducing the long-term expense of major infrastructure projects.
Commitment to Financial Responsibility
The Moody’s rating affirmation reflects MWA’s continued focus on balancing financial responsibility with the need to maintain and improve critical infrastructure.
As MWA moves forward with its capital improvement initiatives, the Authority remains committed to providing reliable water and wastewater services while making responsible financial decisions that support the community’s long-term needs.
The latest Moody’s assessment provides additional independent recognition of MWA’s financial management and planning efforts.
