MWA Investigates Recent Taste Concerns; Water Remains Safe and Reliable
Company News
Over the past several weeks, the Macon Water Authority (MWA) has received reports from some customers who have noticed an “earthy” or “dirt-like” taste in their tap water. The Authority wants to assure customers that the water remains completely safe to drink and continues to meet state and federal water quality standards.
MWA conducts approximately 200 water quality tests daily, monitoring a wide range of indicators to ensure the water delivered to homes and businesses remains safe, clean, and reliable.
Understanding the Cause
In recent weeks, Bibb County has experienced an unusually high number of fires, with around 40 incidents reported across several neighborhoods. Heavy hydrant use during these fire events can temporarily alter water flow patterns in the distribution system, stirring up harmless minerals or sediments that may slightly affect the taste or odor in certain areas.
In addition, seasonal changes at Javors Lucas Lake, where the Authority draws its water supply, can lead to a natural process known as lake turnover, in which water layers mix and release harmless organic compounds, such as geosmin and MIB. These naturally occurring substances can produce an “earthy taste” even at very low levels.
While both factors can influence taste and odor, they do not affect water safety or quality.
Geographic Information System (GIS) Mapping Confirms the Connection
The MWA Engineering and Water Quality teams conducted a geographic review using internal GIS mapping tools. Their analysis found that many of the reported taste concerns occurred in areas that also experienced multiple recent fires, particularly within the Rueben and Town Creek pressure zones. This supports the MWA conclusion that the recent taste reports are the result of temporary distribution system disturbances rather than any water quality issue.
Commitment to Safety and Community Protection
MWA continues to work closely with the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department to ensure reliable water flow and pressure throughout the system. This same partnership helps Macon-Bibb County maintain its Class 1 ISO Fire Protection Rating, the highest possible designation for fire preparedness and water system reliability.
“Our top priority is ensuring the safety and trust of our customers,” said Rachad Hollis, Communications Specialist for MWA. “Even during periods of high demand, such as the recent increase in fire activity, our daily testing confirms that MWA water remains safe and our system continues to perform as designed, protecting both public health and public safety.”
What Customers Can Do
If you notice an earthy taste, try refrigerating the water or using a home filter to help reduce the flavor. The taste will naturally dissipate as seasonal conditions stabilize.
