Ocmulgee Alive! Volunteers Remove Nearly 1,700 Pounds of Trash from Local Waterways
Company News, Industry News
MACON, GA — Nearly 200 volunteers rolled up their sleeves on Saturday, October 24, 2026, to help protect one of Middle Georgia’s most valuable natural resources during this year’s Ocmulgee Alive! community cleanup.
The annual event brought together 193 volunteers who collected an impressive 1,681 pounds of trash, filling 122 trash bags during the cleanup effort.
The Macon Water Authority (MWA) was proud to support the event, which highlights the importance of environmental stewardship, community involvement, and protecting the waterways that serve our region.
Events like Ocmulgee Alive! play an important role in preventing litter and debris from entering local streams and rivers. Trash left along roadways, riverbanks, and other public areas can eventually be carried into waterways by stormwater runoff, affecting water quality, wildlife, and the surrounding environment.
Discarded Tires Remain a Concern
Among the debris encountered during this year’s cleanup,
discarded tires continued to be a recurring problem.
Improperly disposed tires can create environmental concerns, collect standing water that provides breeding grounds for mosquitoes, and contribute to illegal dumping in neighborhoods and natural areas.
Fortunately, Macon-Bibb County residents have several convenient options for disposing of unwanted tires responsibly.
The county operates three Convenience Centers that accept used tires from Macon-Bibb County residents:
- 1010 11th Street — Near the former landfill
- 4214 Fulton Mill Road — Behind the Animal Welfare Center
- 1520 Ninadel Drive
Residents should bring a valid ID showing Macon-Bibb County residency. Some local tire retailers may also accept used tires for a disposal fee.
For operating hours, accepted materials, and additional information, visit the “Macon-Bibb County Solid Waste Convenience Centers website” (https://sw.maconbibb.us/conveniencecenter/).
Protecting Our Waterways Is a Shared Responsibility
While Ocmulgee Alive! is a one-day event, protecting local waterways requires a year-round commitment.
Residents can help by properly disposing of household waste, recycling when possible, keeping litter out of storm drains, and reporting illegal dumping.
The Macon Water Authority extends its appreciation to the
volunteers, organizers, and community partners who helped make this year’s cleanup a success.
Together, we can help preserve the Ocmulgee River and protect our waterways for generations to come.
