MACON, GA — The Macon Water Authority (MWA) announces the swearing-in ceremony for Elaine H. Lucas as the newest member of the MWA Board representing District 1. The swearing-in ceremony will be conducted by Judge Pam White-Colbert on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at 11:00 AM at the Douglass Theatre in Macon, GA.
Elaine Lucas brings decades of experience in public service, leadership, and community advocacy to the MWA. A dedicated member of the Macon community, Lucas previously served on the Macon City Council for 25 years, followed by a 12-year tenure on the Macon-Bibb Commission, where she reached her term limit. Her steadfast commitment to public service and her unparalleled experience in governance make her a valuable addition to the MWA Board.
A native of Georgia, Lucas is an honor graduate of Savannah State University. She holds a master’s degree from Fort Valley State University and a specialist degree from Georgia College and State University. Her passion for education led to a 38-year career as a teacher and counselor, culminating in the founding of E. L. High School Academy in 2011. To date, the academy has provided more than 1,800 students with a second chance to earn their high school diplomas.
In addition to her career in education and local government, Lucas has received numerous accolades. In May 2019, she became the first female Macon-Bibb County Commissioner to earn the statewide Certification as a County Commissioner through the ACCG Lifelong Learning Academy. Elaine Lucas is also an active member of Steward Chapel AME Church and the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
The Macon Water Authority welcomes Elaine H. Lucas’s leadership, insights, and dedication to serving the community. She has been married to Georgia State Senator David Lucas for 48 years, and together they have raised four children, including their late son, Al Lucas. Her work, including the establishment of the Al Lucas Scholarship in memory of her late son, who played professional football in the NFL, underscores her commitment to empowering residents of Macon-Bibb County.
