Winter Weather Tips

Company News

Prevent Frozen Pipes

  1. Insulate Pipes: Wrap exposed pipes with insulation or foam sleeves, especially those in unheated areas like garages, basements, or outdoor spaces.
  2. Open Cabinet Doors: Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around plumbing, particularly if pipes are on an exterior wall.
  3. Seal Leaks: Use caulk or insulation to seal cracks and holes in outside walls and foundations near pipes to reduce exposure to cold air.

Protect Outdoor Water Sources

  1. Disconnect and Drain Hoses: Remove and drain garden hoses and store them indoors. Close inside valves that supply outdoor hose bibs and drain the lines.
  2. Protect Outdoor Faucets: Cover outdoor faucets with insulated covers to prevent freezing.

Prepare for Emergencies

  1. Locate Your Water Shut-off Valve: Know where your main water shut-off valve is in case a pipe bursts, and make sure it’s working properly.
  2. Stock Up on Water: In case of a water service interruption, store an emergency supply of water (1 gallon per person per day for at least 3 days).
  3. Keep Contact Information Handy: Have the Macon Water Authority’s customer service number accessible for reporting emergencies. Phone: (478-464-5600)

What to Do If Pipes Freeze

  1. Thaw Pipes Safely: If a pipe freezes, use a hair dryer or warm towels to thaw it. Never use an open flame or blowtorch, as this is a fire hazard.
  2. Check for Leaks: Once the pipe is thawed, check for cracks or leaks that could lead to further damage.

Winterize Irrigation Systems

  1. Drain Sprinkler Systems: If you have a sprinkler system, drain it to prevent damage from freezing water.
  2. Shut Off Outdoor Water Supply: Turn off any exterior water supply that won’t be in use during the winter.

Stay Informed

  1. Monitor Weather Alerts: Stay updated with weather forecasts to prepare for sudden temperature drops.
  2. Follow MWA Updates: Check Macon Water Authority’s website or social media for any advisories or updates regarding water service during extreme weather.
